Seeing both the personal life and the political side of Churchill during the Dunkirk rescue is fascinating in “Darkest Hour“. Gary Oldman’s performance is amazing. I never saw “Gary Oldman”, just Winston Churchill. Kristin Scott Thomas is charming as Winston’s acerbic and supportive wife, Clemmie. Lily James’ Elizabeth Layton convincingly strives to adjust to Churchill’s rigid demands as his new, overworked secretary. The politics of British parliament can be a little complicated, though the orations are riveting. The scene on the subway is fictional but very necessary to establish the mood of the country.
During the early days of World War II, the fate of Western Europe hangs on the newly-appointed British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who must decide whether to negotiate with Adolf Hitler, or fight on against incredible odds.
