I, Tonya

A humorous look at a tragic pop culture event.  Margot Robbie is great as hard scrabble Tonya Harding trying desperately to skate her way out of her shabby life.  Allison Janney is flawless as Harding’s hard driving, alcoholic, abusive mother.  The bird is a great touch.  The documentary style of the movie adds a sense of authenticity, even though it is very tongue in cheek.

Christopher Plummer gives an outstanding performance in this movie.  Ridley Scott deserves an award for reshooting and still releasing on time.  The Italian scenery is stunning.   “Seeing” the inside details of such a publicized event is interesting.

This movie feels more situational than scripted.  It is a very disturbing slice of life story.  Willem Dafoe is the only good thing in the movie.  He seemed to just be himself.

Mudbound

An interesting story the perspectives of two families. One has “fallen” and we see how they come to terms with their new lives, while another family is desperately trying to “rise”.  The essence of the film is that people have more commonalities than differences.

After first, Roman (Denzel Washington) seems be afflicted.  Then, that he had just been in a rut.  His transformation is fascinating.  His civil activism is an interesting facet of the story.   I was totally distracted by his baggy pants.
