Sam Rockwell will probably win.  He did a great job in “Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri”.   Our choice is Woody Harrelson.  He played the sheriff with sensitivity and humor that could not have been pulled off by another actor.

Allison Janney, there really is no competition.  She nailed LaVonda Harding.  The bird was the perfect touch.

When we watched “The Darkest Hour” we never even glimpsed Gary Oldman.  He was completely absorbed by Winston Churchill.

Martin McDonagh wrote “Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri” with Frances McDormand in mind.  She did an amazing job as grief stricken Mildred, with a wonderful balance of grief and humor.

With four of the five nominees being writer/directors it is a very close race.  It looks like Guillermo Del Toro is the favorite.  The Shape of Water is an unusual genre for the Academy Awards.  This could also be a nod to his body of work.

We like Jordan Peele for his outstanding first try with Get Out.   I think audiences and critics alike were pleasantly surprised by this political thriller/slasher film

Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri” had the most original story.   Even though Mildred was distraught over the lack of closure over her daughter’s murder, this wasn’t a mystery.  It was an intense drama about her grief but with enough humor that it wasn’t overwhelming.  The ending was not sensational or satisfying, it was just over.
