This is the third film in 2017’s Dunkirk trilogy. The action takes place during the Blitz, after the actual rescue. The Ministry of Information has decided to make some propaganda films in an effort to instill pride and raise moral. Plucky Catrin Cole (Gemma Arterton) and cynical Tom Buckley (Sam Claflin) are thrown together to develop a full-length film about the Dunkirk rescue mission. Reminiscent of a Hepburn/Tracy movie, they start out as adversaries only to develop into a well-tuned team. An interesting subplot is Catrin’s growth as a writer and as a woman. Brought in to just write the women’s dialog or “the slop”, she matures into an integral part of the writing team and gains the confidence to go after what she really wants. The supporting cast is perfectly British. This is a very enjoyable movie.
We saw this movie at TIFF 2016 and were in attendance during the Q&A below.
