This movie time shifts between the past and the present. Present day, Rose (Vanessa Redgrave) is living in a mental institution that is being turned into a hotel, she refuses to leave. Dr. Grene (Eric Bana) has been brought in to assess her and in the process, learns her story. In 1942, Rose (Rooney Mara) leaves Dublin for Sligo because of the war. She is beautiful, independent and Protestant. Father Gaunt (Theo James) wants her, can’t have her, so he tries to control her. As the parish priest, he has a great deal of power and influence. This is one of our favorites from TIFF 2016.
A woman keeps a diary of her extended stay at a mental hospital.
