TIFF Day #6

First Man

First Man - The GBY

Today was family day, the one screening that Karl goes with us.  We saw “First Man” at the Princess of Wales Theatre.  This movie is filmed in 16 mm, 35 mm and IMAX.  This gives some of the family scenes a home movie feel and the moon scenes breathtaking vastness.  The movie focuses on the Armstrong family from his joining the space program in 1962 to the moon walk in 1969.  There is also less of an emphasis on the iconic actions and more on the emotional ones.  Director Damien Chazelle does not like special effects and green screens so the actors are seeing what the audience is seeing.  Chazelle, Ryan Gosling, Claire Foy, Corey Stoll, Kyle Chandler (my favorite), Patrick Fugit and Olivia Hamilton were present for an excellent Q & A after the film.  This movie will be in theaters on October 12th, make sure to see it.

With little time to get to Scotiabank Theatre for our next screening, we resigned ourselves to hot dogs for lunch.  The film gods smiled down on us and ZeBu Steak+Bar food truck was where we had to line up.  We shared the Short Rib Sandwich, Pastel de Quiejo and Pastel de Carne.  Our food was good and the restaurant (on St. John Street) should be a big success.

The Death and Life of John F. Donovan - The GBY

“The Death & Life of John F. Donovan” is another movie that I have been stalking for quite a while.  The cast of Jacob Tremblay, Natalie Portman, Kit Harrington & Kathy Bates caught my attention.  The plot has some original touches but basically something we have seen before.  This is an okay movie, good for a Saturday night at home.

We had a gap in our schedule so we decided to have dinner at the apartment.  We stopped at IQ Food Co., on King Street, first to pick up peach gazpacho (so-so, not peachy or spicy enough) and chia pudding.  Next stop Forno Cultura for yummy focaccia bread, pasta, Pomodoro sauce, and some treats.  Finally, we stopped at Fresh & Wild Food Market for butter lettuce and shaved parmesan.  Put it all together and you get a lovely dinner.

Angelo - The GBY

Our final screening of the day was “Angelo” at the TIFF Bell Lightbox.  This film was incredibly slow, disjointed and pointless.  It’s a loosely based biopic that was not incredibly interesting.  It had jarring, incongruous segues and very low production value for a period piece.  The writer/director Markus Schleinzer, was in attendance after the film for a Q & A but we just couldn’t stay and watch.  We are giving it ½ cupcake because we don’t have a graphic for 0 cupcakes.
