White Boy Rick

White Boy Rick - The GBY

We saw White Boy Rick on Day 9 of the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival.  We did not have any talent at our screening, so we did not get to see a Q & A.  This is a cautionary tale of a life gone wrong and a young man that appears to have been failed by the justice system.  Newcomer Richie Merritt’s portrayal of Ricky Wershe, Jr. is convincing as a kid who’s keeps falling into situations.  Whether it is becoming a father or a drug dealer, Ricky doesn’t seem to realize that his actions could have consequences.  Matthew McConaughey’s performance as Ricky’s smooth, slick, salesman father, Richard, is similar to his Lincoln commercials only with more energy.  Bel Powley (Mary Shelley) plays Dawn, Ricky’s strung out sister.  Jennifer Jason Leigh and Rory Cochrane’s scenes are not that dramatic, maybe their underused talents ended up on the cutting room floor.  I would have liked to see more of Bruce Dern and Piper Laurie, who portrayed Ricky’s grandparents.  This is an okay movie, but I really can’t say that you should see it this weekend.  Unless you’re just a fan, I would wait and stream it.
