As much as I enjoyed this movie I really hope it’s not Robert Redford’s last movie. “The Old Man & The Gun” is just a bit of fluff. Redford’s portrayal of Forrest Tucker, an actual bank robber that escaped from 18 different facilities, is done with his usual charming demeanor that we have come to take for granted. His relationship with Sissy Spacek (Jewel) is adorable. Casey Affleck (John Hunt), plays the policeman hunting Tucker with just the right balance of brooding and delight. Danny Glover (Teddy) and Tom Waits (Waller) are hardly noticeable as the other members of the Over the Hill Gang. Elizabeth Moss makes a brief appearance as Tucker’s estranged daughter, Dorothy. The montage of escapes is a highlight and includes a picture of Redford in his prime from “The Chase”. We enjoyed seeing the actors on screen but did not think the plot was very developed or compelling. I would suggest you wait and stream this movie. You can stream one of Redford’s better “criminal on the run” films – “The Sting”, “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” or “Sneakers” today.
