So many of us remember when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, First Man tells another part of the story. Ryan Gosling portrays Armstrong as a very stoic, distant man with a mission. People who have goals like these are probably usually not as emotional as the rest of us. Claire Foy’s reveals Janet Armstrong as his equally enduring wife. Individually and as a couple the Armstrong’s are depicted as strong, focused individuals, so Damien Chazelle’s interpretation of the moon landing was very interesting. He focused on a more emotional Armstrong than on the iconic events that we all know so well. Apparently, Armstrong’s sons worked on the script and said that the talk they received from their father before he took off was the best of their recollections. The rest of the cast was amazing. Jason Clarke (Chappaquiddick, Mudbound) – Ed White, Kyle Chandler (Game Night) – Deke Slayton, Corey Stoll – Buzz Aldrin, Patrick Fugit – Elliott See, Ciarian Hinds (Red Sparrow) –Robert Gilruth, Pablo Schrieber –Jim Lovell and Lukas Haas – Michael Collins represented these remarkable men with conviction.
This was our “family” movie this year at the 2018 Toronto Film Festival. Damian Chazelle, Ryan Gosling, Claire Foy, Kyle Chandler, Corey Stoll, Patrick Fugit and Olivia Hamilton (Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot) – Pat White attended our Q & A. I believe they said the movie is filmed in 16mm (home movies), 35mm, most of the film and IMAX (the moon), so it will be better at the theaters.
