The Hate U Give

The Hate U Give - The GBY

The Hate U Give was our second favorite movie at the 2018 Toronto Film Festival and our favorite movie of this genre so far.  It is an emotional and intelligent look at some of today’s prominent issues.  We think it is the most balanced and hopeful film we have seen about this topic.  Amandla Stenberg gives an amazing performance as Starr, a teenager straddling two different worlds.  Russell Hornsby (Fences) is outstanding as her strong, involved father, Maverick.   We felt his role was the most pivotal, both in the movie and in his children’s lives.  Common (Meagan Leavey), is Starr’s uncle Carlos, a policeman in a difficult situation.  Carlos and Starr share a crucial scene towards the end of the film.  Regina Hall, (Lisa) is resounding as a mother on a mission to protect her family.  Starr successfully lives her “double life” until a tragedy forces her to speak out and live with the consequences.  This event also helps to find her true friends.  While this theme can be very divisive, The Hate U Give is very evenhanded and ends with more optimism than condemnation.
