Timothée Chalamet (Lady Bird, Hostiles, Call Me By Your Name) and Steve Carell are excellent in Beautiful Boy. This is a very difficult story about drug abuse, it’s effect on the user and the people around them. David Sheff (Carell) does a great deal of research on the effects of crystal meth on the human brain. As fascinating as the facts are, they are also extremely disheartening. The movie is not exceptionally emotional since it told from the father’s perspective. This movie is based on the memoirs of both David Sheff and Nic Sheff. I was surprised that the movie does not delve into how Nic started his addiction, but we meet him half way in. They show flashbacks of his relationship with his father and stepmother, Karen (Maura Tierney) but not his initial experimentation with drugs. This movie exemplifies that it takes love and strength to get through this type of situation and that the odds are very against success. Timothy Hutton and Amy Ryan, each have small but important roles.
We saw this movie at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival. Look for it at a theater near you.
