If you enjoyed The Hunt for the Red October you will love Hunter Killer. With the predominantly military male cast, submarines and war ships, this movie is a winner. It is exciting and visceral, and the ending is similarly satisfying. The addition of the SEAL team is a nice touch. With stars like Gary Oldman (The Darkest Hour) as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Charles Donnegan, Gerard Butler as Captain Joe Glass and Common as Rear Admiral John Fisk (The Hate U Give) you know the movie is off to a good start. Linda Cardelini (A Simple Favor), who is having a great year in film, is the female foil to all these high powered, emotional men playing Jayne Norquist from the NSA. The late Michael Nyqvist portrays Captain Andropov, the Russian submariner with quiet conviction. Caroline Goodall (The Dressmaker) does not resort to any stereotypes in her portrayal of U.S. President Dover.
If you are a Gerard Butler fan, check out A Family Man. We saw it at the Toronto International Film Festival 2017 and really enjoyed it. It was originally called The Headhunter. After the name change it kind of fell through the cracks but now you can find it on Amazon Prime.
