At first glance, you might not think this material interests you, but this one is worth watching. Boy Erased is another movie we saw at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival. Lucas Hedges (Ladybird, Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri) was in three movies this year. So far, he seems to be an actor that picks good roles. Boy Erased is about a young man, Jared Eamons, struggling with his sexuality and what kind of person he wants to become. His father, Marshall Eamons (Russell Crowe),an up and coming Baptist minister and car dealership owner in Arkansas, seeks help from men above him in his church’s hierarchy. They lead him to a church supported gay conversion camp. Jared’s mother, Nancy Eamons (Nicole Kidman), takes him to the Love in Action camp in Memphis with a heavy heart. Kidman’s belief in her son and herself is much more riveting than the much touted Destroyer coming to theaters at Christmas. Joel Edgerton (Red Sparrow) did a great job as screenwriter and director He also effectively played the role of Victor Sykes, the camps director. Based on the memoir Boy Erased by Garrard Conley, it is very telling story of standing up for what is right, love, acceptance and forgiveness. It also brought forth the question of his father’s initial lack of acceptance, was it more his religious beliefs or his ambitions, in his community and his church. Stay for the ending credits they are worth watching.
