We were so excited about The Favourite. We have been waiting for it since it’s premiere in Venice, where Olivia Colman won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress. We sat down at the Alamo Drafthouse Cedars and they even had a mini menu with items inspired by the film – we were thrilled. Then it started. We should have known since the movie was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, the man who brought us The Lobster that it would be weird. The pageantry and ridiculous behavior did not mesh. The music was grating and off putting. The acting was stilted or outlandish. This movie may just be too artsy for us. The story is somewhat factual, though the timing may be off. Oliva Colman, the sickly and easily manipulated Queen Anne, Rachel Weisz, the manipulative power-hungry Sarah Churchill and Emma Stone, the down on her luck, fast learning, social climber Abigail Hill come together for this film about power – who has it, who wants it, how to get it and what happens to you when you have it.
I think the item I liked on the menu the most was the Stripped and Whipped shake. It is made with vanilla ice cream, blood orange cordial and Rumchatta.
