Movies seem to run in pairs. A little different story but same theme. No Strings Attached and Friends with Benefits are a perfect example. This year at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival Ben is Back and Beautiful Boy were movies about how drug addiction affects the family with outstanding casts. Beautiful Boy is factual and focuses on the father’s point of view. Ben is Back is fictional and is told from the mother’s perspective. This could be why we connected more with Ben is Back. It also has an interesting focus on the pressures from family and community upon his return from rehab. Julia Roberts (Wonder) is excellent as Ben’s supportive but wary mother, Holly. Holly is desperately trying to trust her son while keeping the rest of her family’s best interests as a priority. The scenes between Holly and Beth Conyers (Rachel Bay Jones) and Holly and Dr. Crane (Jack Davidson) are heartbreaking. Lucas Hedges (Boy Erased) turns in another great performance as Ben, a young man that just wants to return to his family. This film was written and directed by Peter Hedges, Lucas’ father. He was incredibly charming at our Q & A.
