Finally, they’re here – the 2019 Academy Award nominations were announced this morning at 7:20 a.m. CST, live streamed on Oscars.org. The event was hosted by actor Kumail Nanjiani from The Big Sick and “Black-ish” star Tracee Ellis Ross. There really weren’t any surprises but there were a few disappointments. Sometimes it seems that ‘the machine” gets behind a movie and there’s no going back. Everyone in the media is on board and if you don’t agree you just aren’t worthy. Unfortunately, this causes other movies or performances to fall through the cracks.
This year it’s The Favourite, an inane movie that may have been fun for the actors to make but it’s not that much fun to watch. I am also confused by love given to Can You Ever Forgive Me? A movie we didn’t even like well enough to give a solo review. We would have liked to see Julia Roberts get a Best Actress nod for her role in Ben is Back. Nicole Kidman had some powerful scenes in Boy Erased and Felicity Jones was very good in On the Basis of Sex. All three movies completely ignored by the academy. Putting Roma in the best picture category may give Shoplifters, a movie we enjoyed in Toronto, an edge. I am hoping that these nominations will give these movies more distribution in theaters. Several of the foreign films haven’t even made it to our theaters so hopefully Pawel Pawlikowski’s Best Director nomination will bring Cold War to our area.
We are very excited that Green Book received five nominations. Christopher Robin received a nomination for Visual Effects. One of the sweetest movies this year, it’s nice to see it get a little recognition. In Dallas, the Magnolia theater screens the short films in two blocks, animated and live action, in the two weeks before the Awards. This could be the best Awards show yet since it won’t have a host, now if only we could only get the winners to JUST say “Thank You”.
